At the top of Prater’s list was recognizing the ALPA-National Pilots Association merger agreement and reflecting on the 180 days since the union’s Board of Directors established a union-wide strategic plan and the new activities and initiatives that will be required to advance Association goals. The morning session included remarks from Capt. Prater; ALPA’s first vice-president; Capt. Paul Rice; ALPA’s vice-president–administration/secretary, Capt. William Couette; and ALPA’s vice-president–finance/treasurer Capt. Randy Helling.

On Monday, February 2, ALPA unveiled its top aviation safety and security priorities for 2009 in a national media briefing. Held at the JW Marriott Washington, D.C., which is adjacent to the National Press Club, the briefing was also accessible to journalists coast-to-coast via teleconference. The event drew dozens of journalists attending in person and via teleconference.

November 2, 2009 - Midwest Pilots, Fellow Employees Commemorate Last Flight of Legacy Midwest Airlines

On November 2, hundreds of Midwest Airlines pilots, flight attendants, and their families greeted the crew of Midwest Airlines Flight 210 at MKE. This flight marked the end of Boeing 717 operations and the end of the legacy Midwest Airlines. ALPA pilots from Air Wisconsin, AirTran, Colgan, Continental, ExpressJet, and United were there to honor and support their Midwest union brothers and sisters who provided 25 years of the award-winning service that helped build the airline’s reputation for “the best care in the air.”

March 19, 2008 - Pilot Action Draws TSA Chief

On March 19, pilots from more than 12 ALPA pilot groups conducted informational picketing at DCA and TSA headquarters. They were joined by Capt. Prater, other national officers, and executive vice presidents. TSA Administrator Kip Hawley was forced to walk out of TSA Headquarters into the rain to visit with the pilots and speak privately with ALPA President Captain John Prater.

June 11, 2008 - Continental Pilots Picket Their Shareholders Meeting

Over 500 Continental pilots demonstrated June 11 at the Continental Airlines headquarters in Houston and at local Sam Houston Park to show their solidarity and tell management that "the loan is due." The picketing and rally was designed to remind management that as they build their new business plan to meet these changing times, they must remember the sacrifices made by the pilots. They were joined by pilots from other ALPA carriers and independent pilot unions. At the rally, they were joined by their families, Continental employees from other unions and representatives from the National Air Traffic Controllers Association.
